Life as a Hosteler

So much happens everyday, I feel overwhelmed every time I sit down to blog or journal about it!  It's a beautiful problem to have...

I finished up the weekend with a visit to Biji, then to Yakshi and Monu's house.  I spent a couple of hours, eating lunch with Biji and listening to her talk about her aches and pains, more gossip of the family, and stories of my dad when he was little.
Biji and I on her throne (her bed!)

The main floor of our house - I will be able to stay here whenever I come to India!

After that, I went to go hang out with Yakshi and Kamya.  Kamya got a new princess wand that lit up (she was so fascinated!), so she made me take pictures of her with the wand in many different poses....like a "film star" as she kept telling me!

After I came back to the hostel that evening, we joined a pick up basketball game with some of the kids who live around the area.  I was able to speak some Hindi with them, so I felt pretty cool.  It's also fun that I am able to translate my study abroad friends who are with me.

Here is a picture of our hostel room.

They never say "dorm," only "hostel."  We have an American style toilet - most of the toilets in India are squat toilets.  Hey, it get's the job done, so whatever!  But I will admit, I'm glad to have an American-style toilet with toilet paper.  Since we are here for a shorter time, they put us in the guest rooms, so we have a bathroom attached to our bedroom, which is different than the main hostel rooms.  The girls who actually go here have community bathrooms, kind of like our dorms back home.  We visited one of the rooms in the "Graduation Hostel" (graduation means undergrad and post graduation means masters or PhD).  They have 6 to 8 girls in ONE ROOM!  It's like one huge slumber party!  I would never get any studying done.  They were so excited to show us everything...it was fun to see all their colorful bed sheets and room decorations as well as listen to stories about their families and friends.  It's interesting to see the similarities between college girls in India and the U.S.  They watch TV shows and movies (Glee, Twilight and Harry Potter were on the top of their list!).  They laugh, gossip and have a great time.  It's amazing how much I learn outside of the classroom just by talking with girls my age!
