Alaska: the 49th State

I am a US citizen and I’ve never been to Alaska.  I’m sure many US citizens can say that!  Well, here’s my chance.  Michelle and I kept going north – Anchorage was a 3.5 hour flight from Vancouver…talk about north!  It’s actually not too cold up here, maybe 50/60s and sunny or partly cloudy so far. The crazy thing about being at this latitude is the sun goes down for a very small amount of time in the summer.  Even when it does go down, the sky is more of a “dusk” rather than complete darkness.

Anchorage is a nice little city with a downtown, surrounding residential areas, and lovely views of the mountains in most directions on a clear day.  We stayed at a small Bed and Breakfast owned by a nice old woman, literally in the middle of a neighborhood.  After arriving in ANC and having some car troubles (oil light came on the original car…thanks, Avis), we settled in and found ourselves at a fun little restaurant in downtown Anchorage called Snow Goose and Sleeping Lady Brewery.  The view was AMAZING!  The day was so clear, we could see Mount McKinley – the highest peak in North America!  Wow. We also ate reindeer burgers, which is of course the real reason we went to that restaurant.
